About Koti Tirtha
Around 1.5 Km from the Gokarna main city lies a man-made pond named Koti Tirtha, with enormous religious significance. This beautiful Holy tank is spread over 6 acres and experiences great footfall throughout the year.
#Trivia: The local folklore says that Koti Tirtha is the source of a thousand springs.
As it falls near the Mahabaleshwar temple in Gokarna, many devotees come here to take a dip in the sacred water. You will find monks and priests sitting by the pond-side chanting mantras and conducting daily rituals.
The place is beautifully enclosed by temples and monasteries of vibrant colours on three sides and tall coconut trees on the other. The shadow of the leaves of these sky-touching trees gives a green hue to the pond water. Get mesmerized by the reflective sight of the beautiful temples and the trees that give us inner peace.
#Trivia: The beautiful Shivling at the centre of the Koti Tirtha illuminates with light in the evening, making it worth your while.
History behind Koti Tirtha
It is said that the mythological bird Garuda took Shatashrunga mountain, the holy abode of Lord Brahma, making him furious. When he commanded Garuda to place the mountain down, Garuda positioned it so that half of it went into the sea and the other half remained on land.
Around one Koti (point) of the Tirtha is immersed in water; the remaining is on the ground in Gokarna and thus the legendary name- Koti Tirtha.
